SOUSA, Maria Celeste De Sousa
August 13, 2026
She of Chatham passed away peacefully with family by her side on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the age of 86.
Born on October 5, 1939, in Portugal, Celeste was the beloved daughter of Joaquim Moreira and Joaquina Cerqueria. She was predeceased by her sister, Cecilia.
As a young woman, Celeste learned the art of sewing in her uncle’s workshop, where his skill and craftsmanship became a cherished part of who she was. It was also there that she would eventually meet her former husband, Manuel.
Celeste’s greatest work was the life she created for her family. She took great pride in her home and found joy in crafting, baking, and decorating, but nothing meant more to her than being a mother, grandmother, and “Vovó.”
Maria Celeste De Sousa will be lovingly remembered by her children, Joe De Sousa (Sheelagh), Regina Jorge (Rute), Connie Veiga (Antonio), and George De Sousa, and niece and goddaughter, Maria Celeste DaSilva.
She was a proud “Vovó” to Julian Veiga (Georgiana), Zoe Churchill (Steve), Anastasia Sanchez (Marvin), Francis Veiga (Nadine), Clara De Sousa, Olivia De Sousa, Adam De Sousa (Alex), Daniel De Sousa, and Gabriela De Sousa.
Her four great-grandchildren, Simon Sanchez, Eden and Harrison Churchill, and Viana Veiga, held a very special place in her heart, and she adored them dearly.
Those who knew Celeste will remember her quiet, steadfast presence and the simple pleasures that brought her happiness—a cup of Tim Hortons coffee, a blueberry muffin, time spent in the comfort of her cozy apartment, and, most of all, knowing that her family was close.
Celeste will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her memory will remain in their hearts.
On behalf of Celeste and her family, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff of St. Andrew’s Residence and Chatham Health Alliance for their compassion and support.
The family will receive friends at McKinlay Funeral Home (459 St. Clair Street, Chatham) on Monday, August 17, 2026 from 11:00 AM until the funeral service at 12:00 PM. Interment to follow at St. Anthony Cemetery, Chatham.
