Passed away suddenly on May 12th, leaving behind a family and community who loved him deeply and will miss him beyond words.
Joseph Franklin Thompson worked hard his entire life as a First Pressman at TCP, a role he took great pride in through years of dedication and commitment. But nothing in life lit him up more than becoming “Papa.” His grandchildren were truly his world. Each one brought him immense pride, and he loved sharing their accomplishments with his Facebook family whenever he had the chance.
To those who knew Joe, he was a powerhouse of opinion and personality. Beneath that tough exterior, however, was a soft-hearted and incredibly generous man whose greatest joy came from the people he loved. Joe gave so much of himself to his three children and found deep happiness in knowing the wonderful humans they had become. All three of Joe’s children were a constant source of pride and blessing in his life. He was truly the best Papa and father. He will be missed greatly.
Joe was also deeply loved by his wife of almost 45 years. Together they shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and devotion. She often joked that they were real-life Archie and Edith — a bond filled with humour, loyalty, and enduring love.
Joe enjoyed many things throughout his life. He was a talented golfer in his younger days and loved fishing, playing cards, and camping — especially when the grandkids were involved. He was also the family’s Jeopardy guru, astonishing everyone with his quick answers and endless knowledge while his family watched in awe.
Music was another great love of Joe’s. He listened to every style, though old rock and classic country held a special place in his heart. Willie Nelson was a favourite, and he especially loved the song “Grandpa” by The Judds. If Joe found something heartfelt or meaningful, it often moved him to tears while telling others about it — a glimpse into the tender soul behind his strong personality.
Joe also had a special love for dogs, especially his beloved boy, Blue. The two were often found side by side, and Joe never missed a chance to spoil him.
Joe will be profoundly missed, forever remembered, and endlessly loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Beloved husband and best friend of Marlene (nee Hastings). Loving father of Joey (Erin), Stephanie (Jamie) and Ian (Allyson). Cherished grandfather Zach, Matthew, Nathan, Olivia, Hunter, Christopher, Carver, Colton and Ian. Dear brother of Bob (Mary), Mary Fisher (John) and Susan Loghin (Victor). He was friend and brother to the Hastings family. Ron, Denise, Robert, Frankie, Ian, Catherine, Patricia and Sharon Ann. Forever friends with his brother-in-laws Don and Victor.
Predeceased by his parents George and Jessie (nee McAughey) and his mother-in-law Renee Hastings (nee O’Donnell).
