It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of S. J. “Johnny” Miller, our extraordinary Dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather, in his 100th year, at St. Joseph’s Hospice on August 28, 2026.
Predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Irene, in 2012; his sisters, Helen Fraser, Dorothy McCracken, and Virginia Armstrong; and his parents, Stan and Mary Miller.
Johnny is survived by his daughter, Shelley Parsons (Ron Wilson), and his son, Mark Miller (Laurieann). He was the very proud Grampa of Matt Parsons (Breanne), Lindsey Parsons (Steven), Brittany Chyz (Jeremy), and Dr. Diondra Miller (Phil), and cherished great-grandfather of Onyx, Annesley, Sebastian, Anderson, Ashby, Ayla and Lucy. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
Johnny spent his entire career working in the chemical laboratory at Imperial Oil. He retired in 1981 and went on to enjoy an incredible 45 years of retirement.
In his earlier years, he was a member of the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club from which he skipped a strong curling team to over a dozen provincial bonspiel championships. He was also an avid golfer and played well into his eighties with his fellow work retirees.
He always had a classic car in the garage for weekend drives and had a special place in his heart for all of his Bouvier des Flandres dogs, especially Max, whom he walked daily in Canatara Park. Johnny loved Big Band music and played the drums at Kenwick on the Lake in the 1950s. A perfectionist when it came to the backyard rink, he created a place where his kids, and many neighbourhood kids, learned to skate and play hockey. As a father, he spent countless weekends travelling throughout Ontario for hockey games and tournaments and made sure summers were spent at the beach with extended family.
Growing up during the Great Depression shaped Johnny’s life and instilled in him a generosity that was quiet and unwavering. He was always ready to lend a helping hand or give what he could, never seeking recognition or anything in return.
Johnny will be remembered for his quick wit and sage advice, and for his remarkable ability to whistle a tune like no one else could—a sound that always let you know he was near.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Kim and to the exceptional staff and volunteers at St. Joseph’s Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
In accordance with Johnny’s wishes, a private family service will be held. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to St. Joseph’s Hospice (cheques only at the funeral home please).
