Passed away peacefully at Hillsdale Terraces Long-Term Care on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the age of 86.
Maria Abramyk was the beloved wife of the late Theodore, who predeceased her in 2011. She was the cherished and loving mom of Lesia Morgan (Winston), and Daria Abramyk. Maria was a proud and devoted Baba to Alexia, Christina, Winston, Tyrese, Jaden, and Michaela, each of whom brought tremendous joy and pride to her life.
She was predeceased by her dear sister, Telka Nowcka, and her husband, Wojchech.
Maria will be lovingly remembered by her extended family, dear friends, and all those whose lives were touched by her kindness, strength, and warm heart.
Maria’s life was a beautiful story of courage, determination, love, and family. In the early 1970’s, she made the brave decision to leave behind the life she knew and begin a new journey in Canada. She arrived in Toronto knowing only one friend and facing the enormous challenge of starting over in a new country. Yet, with strength and determination, Maria embraced this new chapter in her life and built a beautiful future for herself and the family she would soon create.
Fate brought Theodore into her life. After three months of knowing each other, the two soon married and began their life together, eventually making their home in Oshawa, where they started their family and created a lifetime of memories together. Maria and Theodore shared many happy years, and throughout their marriage they enjoyed travelling and experiencing new places together.
Oshawa quickly became home to Maria, and she embraced the Ukrainian community with great pride and enthusiasm. Her faith, heritage, and sense of community were very important to her. From the time she arrived in Oshawa, Maria was a proud member of her church and could often be found helping wherever she was needed. She was especially well known for lending a hand at Dnipro Hall, where she enjoyed being part of the many gatherings, celebrations, and traditions that brought the Ukrainian community together.
Maria had a gift for creating warmth wherever she was. She loved to garden and took great pleasure in watching things grow and flourish. She also loved cooking and baking, and her kitchen was often a place of comfort, delicious food, and the familiar warmth of home. Through the meals and treats she lovingly prepared, Maria expressed one of the simplest and most meaningful forms of love – caring for the people around her.
Friendship was also very important to Maria. Her dear friends Olga and Anastasia held a special place in her heart, and together they formed a wonderful group of ladies who shared laughter, stories, companionship, and many treasured moments over the years. These friendships brought Maria much happiness and were a meaningful part of her life.
While Maria enjoyed many things, nothing brought her greater happiness than her family. She treasured every opportunity to spend time with her children and grandchildren. As a Baba, she took enormous pride in her grandchildren and cherished the moments, conversations, celebrations, and everyday visits they shared. The love she had for her family was unwavering, and the memories she created with them will remain in their hearts forever.
Maria will be remembered as a woman of quiet strength and remarkable courage – a woman who came to a new country and, despite the challenges before her, created a life filled with family, friendship, faith, community, and love. She built a home, nurtured her family, remained proud of her Ukrainian heritage, and found joy in the simple but meaningful moments that made life special.
Though Maria will be deeply missed, the love she gave, the traditions she shared, and the memories she created will continue to live on through her family and all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
The family will receive friends at Armstrong Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 6–8 p.m. Panachyda will take place at 7 p.m. in the chapel.
A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, September 9, at 10 a.m. at St. George the Great Martyr Ukrainian Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Wolodymyr and St. Olga Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Maria to St. George the Great Martyr Ukrainian Catholic Church or Alzheimer’s Society of Durham Region would be appreciated by the family.
