It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Joanna “Joan” (Higgins) Serbeniuk on November 12, 2024, at the age of 86 years. Born November 8, 1938, in Montreal, QC, Joan was a remarkable woman who left a lasting impact on everyone she met.
Joan was the matriarch of her family and embodied strength, intelligence, and compassion. She was bold, feisty, and engaging, yet kind, thoughtful, and generous. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by her daughter Cindy Higgins (Peter) and son Danny (late Nancy). She was a beloved grandmother to Katie, Ryan, Cameron, Hayden, and Hollie (Ryan), and cherished great-grandmother to Malcolm Rylie. Joan also leaves behind her brother John (Michelle), niece Alethia, and nephew Brandon.
Joanie enjoyed many wonderful times with her extended family in Entrelacs and cherished friends from Windsor to Quebec. She worked for 40 years at Windsor Raceway and served as President of SEIU Union Local 528, advocating tirelessly for others with her sharp negotiation skills and unwavering determination. In her leisure time, she took great pride in tending to her roses and vibrant gardens.
Cremation has been entrusted to Low & Low Funeral Home, Uxbridge. A private ceremony to honor Joan’s memory will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region would be greatly appreciated by the family.
