A dedicated educator, scholar, and lifelong advocate for children, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at the age of 78.
John Le Forestier deep love for learning began during his formative years as a student at De La Salle Collegiate, run by the Christian Brothers. It was there that he developed a profound devotion to the Catholic Church and a lifelong affinity for the Latin Mass. Guided by his faith, he held a special devotion to St. Joseph, the patron saint of workers and special education, reflecting John’s own passion for working with his hands and championing those who learned differently.
A voracious reader and a brilliant mind, John dedicated his professional life to alternative education and advocating for children with learning disabilities. His leadership and vision led him to serve as the editor of his collegiate newspaper, the editor of the Journal of Learning Disabilities, and the proud founder of two private schools. His legacy lives on in the countless students whose lives were transformed by his patience, belief in their potential, and tireless advocacy.
Outside of his professional life, John was an enthusiastic collector of model trains. Through this passion, he built a vibrant community of friends across Canada and the United States, whose camaraderie, shared joy, and lifelong connections he deeply loved and appreciated.
Above all his academic, professional, and personal achievements, John loved his immediate and extended family deeply. He was a pillar of strength, kindness, and wisdom, and he will be forever remembered by his loving wife, Noelle, their children and grandchildren, and his brothers and sisters.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Oshawa on Thursday, October 29th at 10:30 am followed by interment at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Whitby.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his honour to Operation Smile Canada to continue his lifelong mission of bringing hope and care to children.
