McDONALD, Elin Indiana (nee Stephanson) - Of Peterborough, Ontario, passed away quietly, surrounded by her loving family at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on August 16th, 2017.
Born 1921 at home on a family farm in Elfros, Saskatchewan, Elin held a strong reverence for the land that feeds us. She was proud of her Icelandic heritage and had a deep appreciation for nature.
She met the love of her life and husband of 46 years, Alexander Gildas McDonald at the Hamilton Conservatory of Music where they bonded over their love of studying and teaching piano. Elin was a proud teacher who spent many years at Humber Valley Village Middle School in Toronto.
She was a progressive woman and ahead of her time marching in anti-war protests, obtaining a university degree in music, strongly supporting women's and LGBTQ rights, and various other humanitarian causes. She had a keen interest in exploring various religious and spiritual beliefs. Her free spirit, humour and lovable quirkiness was contagious and brought light into any room.
Elin was predeceased by her husband Alexander (1993), daughter Susan (1952), sister Kristin and brothers Barney, Eric, Stephan and Harold.
Elin will be deeply missed by her sister Agnes of Calgary; and children Zaz (Denis), Jo, Stefan (Donna) and John. She will also be missed by her seven grandchildren - Bill, Stefanie, Jessica, Lisa, Stefan, Gabby, Owen, 16 great-grandchildren, and the wonderful caregivers at Royal Gardens, Peterborough.
Elin will be returned to the earth of Saskatchewan where she was born.
