ROSS, Dr. J. Barrie - Passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2020.

Dr. J. Barrie Ross was born in Sunderland, Co. Durham, UK. He graduated M.B. B.S. from Durham University, England in 1954, and D.Obst.R.C.O.G in 1956.

He emigrated to Newfoundland In 1956 and was in general practice with obstetrics until 1969 when he trained in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK under Professor J.T. Ingram. Returning to Newfoundland in 1964 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada later that year.

He was a founding member of Memorial University Medical School. He was invited to join Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1973. He played a major role in the divisionalization of the Department of Medicine as Chairman of the Working Group Subcommittee on Organization and Operations. He was appointed Full Professor of Medicine in 1988.

He was Chief of Service, Dermatology at the VG Hospital in Halifax from 1975 to 1991, Head of the Division of Dermatology from 1976 to 1991 and Program Director of the Dalhousie Postgraduate Training Program in Dermatology from 1982 to 1992. He was a Past-President of the Canadian Dermatology Association, the Canadian Association of Professors of Dermatology and a number of provincial medical societies.

He received awards for medical research including the Excellence Award of the Department of Medicine In Teaching and Research in 1990 and its Distinction Award in Research In 1992. He was named Physician of the Year by the Canadian Dermatology Foundation in 1995. In 1997, he was made a Senior Member of the CMA and similarly in 2001, of the Medical Society of Nova Scotia. He received the Award of Merit from the Canadian Dermatology Association in 2001.

Dr. Ross retired from clinical medicine in 1996 but remained active in teaching and research. He co-founded the Dalhousie Academy of Medicine with other retired faculty members in 2003. He spent the final years of his retirement in Toronto where he immersed himself in family and friends following the 2012 passing of his beloved wife and life-long partner Bette Ross.

This biography is how he would have wished to be remembered. He took tremendous pride in his profession and career. He was also an avid musician playing all forms of clarinets, in all kinds of ensembles, driving himself across Toronto to play in orchestras well past his 90th birthday.

Dr. J. Barrie Ross is survived by his children Naomi, Brian and David Ross, daughters-in-law Susan Ross, Kitty Ross, and his five granddaughters Cohava, Tirtza, Temima, Ellie and Amy Ross.

Gone but never forgotten. Always remembered and always loved. Already missed.
