MEESTER, Anna Petronella Maria - (January 19, 1931 – December 13, 2020)

Anna Petronella Maria Meester passed away peacefully surrounded by family in her 90th year at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville.

Born in Amsterdam, Holland, Anna immigrated and became a proud Canadian in 1952. She was an involved resident of Newcastle’s Wilmot Creek community since 2005.

She was a devout Catholic and was a charitable member of the St. Francis of Assisi church community, just receiving her 60 year recognition as a member of the Catholic Woman’s League.

Married in 1952, she was predeceased by loving husband Henk Meester (2008).

Anna is survived by her children John (Crystal), Eric (Carla), Miriam (Brent), Anne-Marie (Wayne), Nelly (Pete), and Henry. She was very proud of her 15 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

Anna filled every moment of her 90 years with her many passions. Athletic and competitive, she played golf, curling, shuffleboard, darts, and cards until her final days. Anna was also creative: an avid knitter for the Bowmanville Hospital, she created stained glass, was an acrylic painter, and enjoyed rug hooking and macrame.

In her quiet moments she enjoyed reading, listening to music, and completing crosswords. Anna loved travelling and took many trips back to visit The Netherlands.

Oma, as she was known, was loved by many near and far. She was happiest when her house was filled with people and always had a pot of soup on the stove and a glass of white wine ready to welcome guests. Anna enjoyed celebrating and passing down Dutch traditions and she never missed visiting family members and friends on their birthdays.

Anna was independent, honest, straightforward, compassionate, and selfless.

If so desired, donations may be made to St. Francis of Assisi, St. Vincent DePaul, or Bowmanville Hospital.

Anna will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by those who knew and loved her.

A private family service will take place Friday December 18, 2020.
