Blackwell Right Reverand DouglasBLACKWELL, Right Reverend Douglas Charles Blackwell   -  June 3, 1938 – May 25, 2022 

The Right Rev. Blackwell passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 with his family by his side.

Beloved husband of Sandra.

Loving father of Deborah McCarten (Rick), Mark (Ashley) and Kathryn. 

Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Liam, Ryan, Jesse, Lukas, Georgia and Oliver, his many nieces, nephews and all who knew him. Predeceased by his six brothers and sisters. 

The family would like to send a heartfelt Thank You, to the Staff at Lakeridge Gardens, Ajax for the kindness and care that they provided.

Ordained Deacon in 1963 and Priest in 1964 in the Diocese of Calgary, he also served in the Diocese of Saskatoon before transferring to the Diocese of Toronto in 1974.

He served as Assistant Director for Adult Education at the Aurora Conference Centre, Executive Assistant to Archbishop Lewis Garnsworthy and took on the additional role of Director of Communications.

He was installed as Canon in 1978, appointed Archdeacon of York in 1987, elected Suffragan Bishop on June 4, 1988 and consecrated September 15, 1988, and served as Area Bishop of Trent-Durham until retirement in 2003.

Bishop Blackwell went on to serve as Interim Priest-in-Charge in several parishes and was Honorary Assistant of St. Thomas, Brooklin.

Bishop Blackwell's funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at St. Thomas, Anglican Church - Brooklin, at 1:00 pm. Visitation will take place prior to the service at 12:00 pm and a reception will follow the service in the Parish Hall. (The family asks that masks be worn during the service).

In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Durham Region or St. Thomas Anglican Church-Building Fund.
