James Wilfred “Jim” Harkness
1936 - November 16, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Wilfred Harkness on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the Palmerston Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Jim leaves behind his devoted wife of 65 years, Doreen Harkness, and his children: Alan Harkness and Frank Wu, Doug and Charlene Harkness, John Harkness, and James Harkness and Wai Kin Chan. He was a proud grandfather to Alexis and Michael Rock, Kurtis Harkness and Meagan, Spencer Harkness and Mackenzie, Jorja Harkness and Liam, and Sienna and Kaiden Harkness-Chan. Jim cherished his great-grandchildren: Brexton, Teagan, Scarlett, Levi, and Layne.
Jim is survived by his sister Mary Harkness of Waterloo and in-laws Doris Bell of Aurora and Morris and Ross Langwisch of Drew. Predeceased by his parents Wilfred and Isabel Harkness, sister-in-law Velma, and brothers-in-law Lloyd Binkley and Eldon Bell, Jim will also be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Growing up on a farm in Minto Township, Jim attended Harriston High School before working for the Royal Bank of Canada in Toronto, Sarnia, and Guelph, while returning to Minto on weekends to help on the family farm. In 1966, Jim and Doreen, with their sons Alan and Doug, moved back to Minto, where Jim worked as Office Manager for Canada Packers before purchasing the family farm in 1969. Over the years, Jim transitioned from raising cattle to establishing two farm equipment businesses, distributing machinery across Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada. His dedication to his work was unwavering, continuing well into his 88th year.
A private family funeral service will be held at Hardy-Lee Funeral Home in Harriston, followed by a public celebration of Jim’s life at the Harriston Legion, 53 Elora Street South, Harriston, on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., with words of remembrance at 6:00 p.m.
Memorial donations to Knox-Calvin Presbyterian Church, Harriston, or the Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family in lieu of flowers. The family extends their gratitude to the staff of the Palmerston Hospital for their compassionate care.
