Murray was born September 8, 1936, in Flesherton to Cecil and Winetta Betts. He was born and raised on the farm, and it became his life passion. He met and married the love of his life, Phyllis, on February 15, 1958, and together they raised their five beautiful children. Community was everything to Murray, serving Artemesia Township for 31 years as councillor for 2 years, Deputy Reeve for 4 years, and Reeve for 25 years, as well as 23 various other committees within those years of politics. He was a Director for A.C.R.O., and served 6 years on the Niagara Escarpment Commission (N.E.C.), representing Grey County. He was awarded citizen of the year for Artemesia in 1994 and was an avid member of his local church community. He will be missed by many, but his contribution to our community will be remembered.
