She passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, at Hospice Waterloo Region, Cook Residence, after a long and courageous battle with Frontal Temporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD), a heartbreaking disease that caused Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) and Speech Aphasia. Through it all, Cheryl faced her illness the only way she knew how — with dignity, strength, and quiet courage. Cheryl was born on December 15, 1947, to proud parents Eddie and Lorraine Monk. She will be remembered for her warm heart, gentle spirit, and the deep love she shared with those closest to her.

On this day, I lost the best friend I ever had and the love of my life. Cheryl’s devotion, kindness, and companionship will remain with me forever. Cheryl leaves behind her loving husband, Wayne Deschner. She is also survived by her sisters Patricia Gunn of Waterloo and Colleen Monk of Dollard; her niece Joanne Miller of Waterloo; her nephew Mark Christie of Pointe-Claire and her great nephew Jalen Noronha (Rayna). Cheryl was predeceased by her older sister, Barbara Monk of Waterloo. She also leaves behind her two beloved “fur balls,” Toffee and Jessie, who brought her great comfort and joy.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the many doctors and professionals who worked tirelessly to help Cheryl and advance understanding of her illness: Dr. David Ricella (Dollard), Dr. S. Gold and Dr. Xia (Jewish General Hospital), Dr. C. Roncero, Dr. H. Chertkow, and Alice Zhang (Baycrest, Toronto), and for the wonderful care she received at Waterloo Hospice. Your care and dedication meant so much.

A special thank you as well to Howard K. for helping arrange some of the wonderful assistance Cheryl received during her journey, and to Ann B. for bringing us together. Cheryl will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who loved her. Relatives and friends are invited to the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron Street, New Hamburg, on Saturday, March 14, 2026 from 1 – 4 p.m. To honour Cheryl, the family requests that you wear bright colours. Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, New Hamburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Hospice Waterloo Region can be made at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home.
