It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Margaret “Joan” Gaudet (née McClung) on June 11, 2025, at the age of 90. Also lovingly known as “Crazy Grandma Joan” or “CGJ,” she left us after a day filled with love and visits from dear friends and family.
Survived by her daughters Cheryl and Catherine Gaudet, grandchildren Taylor (Winn Gaudet) Daymond, Justin, and Jordan Wiens, and youngest sister Patti. Predeceased by her parents Winnifred and Stanley McClung, her siblings Beth, Barb, Doreen, and her beloved son Robert “Bobby” Gaudet.
Joan was born in Midland, Ontario, during a snowstorm on December 15, 1934. She grew up on a farm where her love for animals and gardening began. Although they had little money, Joan often said they were “rich” in love, home, and happiness.
She began volunteering at age 10 at the YMCA and continued to serve communities in Canada, the USA, Mexico, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. Her most treasured career was being a bus driver in the United States, a role that fed her passion for travel and connecting with people.
Joan found her sanctuary in Thornbury, Ontario, where she built a home surrounded by gardens and opened her doors to all. Whether volunteering, socializing, dancing, or laughing, her presence lit up every room. To her, Thornbury wasn’t just a place—it was home.
Known for her generosity, wit, community spirit, and love of storytelling, Joan’s life was larger than any obituary could contain. Her legacy will live on through the thousands she touched and the stories still told in her memory.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the Meaford Hospital for the care they provided in her final days.
