Averil Betty Haass graduated from Toronto Teachers College in 1956. She taught Grade 3 for 2 years. She took a hiatus for several years to raise her family. She resumed teaching – supply in 1972. In 1983 she began teaching English as a Second Language which became a passion for her. She continued teaching ESL for 23 years and then retired and volunteered with ESL.

Betty and Henry married June 23, 1956, and had a wonderful, fulfilling married life. They built the home they lived in for 67 years on Taunton Rd and in 1972, they started building their cottage on Cameron Lake where the family enjoyed many good times together.

Betty and Henry travelled the world together. Canada was always their base, and they visited all Canadian provinces. In 1969 Henry and Betty with the family in tow flew their own plane CF-RGU across Canada and back. They also visited many states in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China, Vietnam, Egypt, Norway, Brazil and Chile.

After Henry passed away, Betty felt it would be too difficult to maintain the home they’d lived in together for 67 years and she moved to Harmony Hill Retirement Home. Here she lived comfortably and happy until her death.
