Peacefully, on Friday, September 25, 2026, at Caressant Care in Lindsay, at age 90. Joan Ellen Barnes (nee McLagan), of Nestleton, beloved wife of the late Thomas Francis Barnes (2023).
She was born to the late Gordon McLagan and Kathleen Morgan on September 2, 1936 in East York, Ontario, Joan spent her formative years in Toronto, roller skating and exploring her home city. After working for Eaton’s Department Store, she began a career at the University of Toronto. She married the love of her life on September 17, 1955 and together they raised their two children, Thomas and Jody.
Joan is survived by her children Thomas Barnes (Wendy) and Jody Smith (Bill Abbott), four grandchildren Gordon Smith (Claudia), Cori Fox (Aaron), Kathleen Cochrane (James) and Jaclyn Muir (Jim). She was also blessed with five great grandchildren Isabelle and Charlotte Cochrane, Cameron and Benjamin Fox and River Muir. She was delightfully direct and she always made her wishes clear.
A special thank you to the staff and Dr. Bowen of Caressant Care in Lindsay for the great care they provided mom during her stay. Private arrangements have been entrusted to the WAGG FUNERAL HOME, 216 Queen Street in Port Perry (905-985-2171). A celebration of her life will be at a later date.
