LAPLANTE, William Laplante

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Bill (Billy) Laplante announces his peaceful passing on June 13, 2026, at the age of 76. For two and a half years, Bill faced cancer and its many challenges with quiet strength and unwavering determination, until he could no longer continue the fight.

William Laplante was born on April 8, 1950 in Espanola to the late Wilfred of Massey Ontario and Clara (nee Whittle) of Wigan England. Bill married his loving wife Louise (nee Giroux) on July 5, 1980 and together they shared 46 years of marriage, some difficult and sorrowful and many joyous ones. Their love grew stronger with every passing day.

Bill is predeceased by his siblings Edward (Junior) Laplante, Penny Laplante , Keitha Gibson and his beautiful daughter Danielle. He will be deeply missed by his brother Bob Laplante ( partner Joanne), sister Terri Laplante, sister-in-law Lorraine and brother-in-law Denis as well as many nieces and nephews.

Bill devoted many years as a licensed mechanic in Espanola, beginning his career at Espanola Garage in the 1970s and eventually retiring from Northern Ford at the age of 60. In his younger years, Bill’s love for speed drove him to numerous victories on the motorcycle and car racing circuits as well as some slightly illegal street racing.

Beyond his work, Bill loved the game of golf. He cherished the friendships and camaraderie shared on the green and enjoyed countless rounds at the Espanola Golf Course, as well as many beautiful courses around the world. Scotland’s stunning courses held a special place in his heart. In recent years, Bill joyfully checked off many items from his bucket list, including attending the Masters Tournament in Augusta, fishing in Haida Gwaii, and panning for gold in Dawson City. When not golfing, fishing, or travelling , he could often be found tending quietly to his vegetable garden. A die-hard Montreal Canadiens fan, he frequently engaged in good-natured ribbing with his Toronto Maple Leafs-loving family and friends. Bill loved people. His generous spirit and infectious sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him and call him a friend.

The family extends sincere gratitude to Drs. Bonilla and Shehata and all the nursing staff at the Northeast Cancer Treatment Centre and the Espanola Regional Hospital & Health Centre for the respect, dignity, and kindness shown during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Leukemia Research Foundation, Northeast Cancer Centre, or Espanola Regional Health Centre would be deeply appreciated.

A Come and Go Celebration of Life will be held on June 23rd at the Espanola Golf and Country Club from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

β€œThough my heart is broken, I take comfort knowing your love will always be with me. Rest easy, my love, and give our beautiful daughter a big hug and kiss for me.” β€” Louise
