LYCZAKOWSKIY, Zdzislawa Lyczakowski

passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at Huronia Hospice – Tomkins House in Penetanguishine, Ontario.

Zdisława was born in Krypno Poland on November 1st, 1932. She is predeceased by her parents Aleksander and Stanisława, brother Jan, sister Jadwiga, brother Czesław (wife Irena, children Danuta, Barbara, Kazimierz and Janusz), brothers Tadeusz and Bronisław (wife Janina, daughter Agnieszka and husband Mark, daughters Adrianna and Wiktoria), brother Bogusław (wife Teresa, children Jacek, Agata, Sylwia).

Her family in Canada was Irena (nee Dobrzynska) and Stanisław Cybulko (children Margaret and Urszula).

Zdzisława left Poland in the early 1960’s to her aunt in Boston and worked for the Porter family.

She came to live in Toronto for 2 years following that, with the Cybulko family in the early 1970’s.

She found work at Fairview Mall in Scarborough in a restaurant and became friends with Roger Couillard as a short order cook for about 10 years and so her culinary career took off. She prided herself in a special blend of spices that she created and shared with everyone.

She followed Roger and his family to Bowmanville where she continued to work at a local restaurant. She worked there until she met her husband Jan Łyczakowski. She met him through a mutual friend who owned a store that they both frequented.

She was also very close to the Zdravkovski family (Helen, Ordan, Michael, Nicholas, Tanya) and held the honour of being Godmother to Nicholas. She met the Zdravkovski family while she lived with Roger and his family beside Sheila and Tom German (Nick’s grandparents) which became their close friends.

She married Jan Lyczakowski on May 18, 1987 and Irena Cybulko and her brother Bronek had the honour as witnesses.

They settled down in a house that they bought together in Bowmanville. Jan passed away on December 23, 2016. After Jan’s death, Urszula began caring for her by taking her to appointments and helping her to stay in her home as long as possible. They would go out for lunch at her favourite places to eat and shop at the Corner Deli in Oshawa for all her favourite Polish food. Nick, her Godson was also a great support to keep her in her home and help when needed, especially when it came to tech issues and weekly visits. Her niece Agnieszka called her from Poland almost every day and kept her up to date with news from Krypno.

Zdisława could not go to an appointment without having a Polish chocolate bar in her purse to gift the people who helped her. She got great joy in giving people, chocolate, a bottle of wine, Polish sausages or a bottle of Crown Royal.

As she began to lose her sight due to macular degeneration, her favourite hobbies became Crossword scratch tickets (with a big magnifying glass), watching/listening to the Jays on TV and game shows with Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy as an evening ritual.

Zdzislawa Lyczakowski continued to live in her home despite some health issues and series of hospital stays. She was blessed by the care of her friend Roger Couillard during her final years since she was determined to stay in her house until the end.

She got her final wish by being transferred to the Huronia Hospice – Tomkins House in Penetanguishene, Ontario. She wanted to be near the Cybulko cottage when long term cares facilities became part of the conversation for next steps in her care. She spent her last 5 days under the most incredible and dignified care from the staff at the hospice.

We would like to thank all the staff at the Bowmanville Hospital (Lakeridge Health), the staff at Huronia Hospice – Tomkins House, her family doctor Dr. Omiwole and his staff, who took great care of her during the last chapter of her life.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, August 20, 2026 from 10:00 am – 10:45 am at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home on 53 Division Street, Bowmanville.

The Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 am at St. Joseph’s Church on 127 Liberty St. South, Bowmanville.

Following the Funeral Mass, the Burial will take place at Bowmanville Cemetery on 1330 Haines Street, Bowmanville.

All are welcome to join for a Reception lunch at Swiss Chalet on 2310 Regional Highway #2 in Bowmanville following the Burial at 1:00 pm.
