MARTIN, Maureen Martin
January 10, 1939 - May 3, 2026Passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, at Hogarth Riverview Manor in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Born in Sioux Lookout, Maureen grew up moving through various communities with her family before settling in Fort William where she worked as a child in the family store, Capital Grocery, located at the corner of Cummings and Norah Streets. Here, she began establishing a work ethic that would remain with her throughout her life. She was especially proud of being crowned Miss Lakehead Chapter Credit Union, an esteemed title that honoured the respect in which she was held and the community pride that would define much of her life.
Love found her at a wedding, where she and Reno first met while standing up for mutual friends. They would go on to build a life together, sharing 34 devoted years until his death. She always joked that βshe married him for his car.β
Over the years, Maureen held a wide range of positions that reflected both her abilities and her community ties. She worked for the Bishop of the Diocese of Fort William, at Chappelβs Department Store, with the Ministry of Natural Resources at the Thunder Bay Tree Farm, and ran her own antique business. She ultimately built a distinguished career as a real estate agent and broker β earning recognition as an award-winning professional prior to her retirement.
Maureen Martin was a committed and active member of her community. Her love of antiques found a practical outlet when she organized many annual antique shows as fundraisers for Bethammi Nursing Home, and Community Living Thunder Bay. She volunteered at the 1995 World Nordic Ski Championships, the 1996 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, gave many years to the Folklore Festival and served as a union steward with OPSEU.
Outside of her work and volunteer commitments, Maureen enjoyed her travels throughout Europe, Mexico and the U.S., playing the slot machines, Friday night dinners with her sisters, and summers at the camp on One Island Lake. Her Catholic faith was a constant in her life. Above all else, her grandchildren and great-grandson were her greatest joy.
Maureen was predeceased by her husband Reno Martin; her parents Joseph Victor and Elizabeth Ryan; her brother Victor and sister-in-law Theone; her brother Michael; and her sister Margaret Reynolds and brother-in-law James.
She is survived by her daughter Michele; her sons Greg (Brenda) and Harley (Lindsay); her grandchildren Michael Clark, Ian Clark (Ally), Alex, Cas, Nathan, Emily, Zachary, and Avery; her great-grandson Mason Clark; her sister Colleen Marchant (Robert); her sister-in-law Marlene Ryan, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Maureen lived a full life β one built on faith, hard work, and genuine engagement with the people and places around her. She will be fondly remembered by those who knew her.
