MERCHAND , Grace Merchand

Grace passed peacefully at Bonnechere Manor, Renfrew on July 28th, in her 108th year. Born March 2, 1918, Grace McKay Wiseman, was the only child of Donald and Elizabeth Wiseman, who had recently immigrated from Scotland to Toronto. Grace lost her father at four months of age and her mother 12 years later. Grace’s formative years were spent in Whitby with her stepfamily.

Shortly after obtaining her teaching qualifications Grace began her teaching career in Denby Ontario. There she met and married the love of her life, LT Merchand. They moved to Eganville where they built their home and the iconic “Royal Pine Pavillion” dance hall. LT passed away in 1974 and Grace continued to live in their family home until 2020.

Grace’s passion was teaching. She had a long and varied career, including 19 years at CFB Petawawa, “The Camp”, until she retired in 1973. She then became an active member of the retired teachers of Ontario working on the Eganville local executive until 2019. Her colleagues in education were an integral part of her life and she was appreciative of their friendships and the kindness offered in her latter years.

Recently, Grace resided at Bonnechere Manor, where the care and compassion of staff enabled her to live her final years with pride and dignity. Grace will be missed for her remarkable wisdom as well as her wonderful sense of humor. She touched many lives over 107 years and will be fondly remembered by her community and her extended Merchand, Primeau, Haley and Hopkins families. She was the beloved auntie to many nieces and nephews and cherished godmother to Joanne Farquharson.

Many thanks to Anne-Marie Primeau and Leona Haley for their love and support.

Please join us and celebrate Grace’s life at St. James The Less Catholic Church on Friday, August 1, 2025 where visitation will be held from 10:00am until time of funeral at 11:00am. Reception will follow in the parish hall. Interment will take place at Holy Rosary Cemetery, Griffith in the afternoon.
