NIELSEN, Sylvia Nielsen

It is with profound sadness that the family of Sylvia Nielsen announces her peaceful passing on June 8, 2026, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 78 years old.
Born in Toronto on April 7, 1948, Sylvia was the beloved daughter of the late Asger Nielsen and May Nielsen. She was a devoted sister, aunt, great-aunt, and friend, whose kindness, generosity, and unwavering love touched countless lives.
Sylvia is lovingly remembered by her brother, Erik (Moira); her niece, Viktoria; her nephew, William; and her great-nephew, Liam, all of whom she loved deeply and spoke of often. She also leaves behind many dear friends and neighbours at Marsh Lane, whose friendship and support meant so much to her over the years.

Known for her quick wit, wonderful smile, sense of humour, and her incredibly big heart, Sylvia always put the needs of others ahead of her own. She would do anything for those she loved and found joy in life’s simple pleasures and the people around her.
Family was everything to Sylvia. She played an important role in helping to raise her younger brother and later became a loving and supportive presence in the lives of her niece and nephew, a role she cherished deeply. Her greatest happiness came from spending time with those she loved, sharing stories, laughter, and creating memories that will be treasured forever.

Sylvia had many fond memories of travelling through the United States with her mother and brother, towing their Corvair and enjoying adventures together. She treasured time spent with family in Peterborough, attending car shows, and taking scenic drives down country roads with the windows down and Bob Seger playing. She shared a special love of horses with her niece Viktoria, and she had a lifelong love of cars and animals. Most of all, Sylvia adored her family, including those with paws, and her beloved cats brought her endless comfort and companionship.

Throughout her illness, Sylvia faced every challenge with remarkable courage and determination. Even as the odds grew against her, she continued to fight with incredible strength and dignity. Her resilience, bravery, and deep capacity for love left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate and dedicated staff at Lakeridge Health Ajax Pickering Hospital, the Durham Region Cancer Centre, and Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Their kindness, support, and exceptional care helped guide Sylvia and her family through difficult times and will never be forgotten.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the coming weeks, with details to be announced.

In honour of Sylvia’s memory, please do something kind for a friend or neighbour, check in on family, and give your fur babies an extra hug. Those wishing to make a donation in Sylvia’s memory are invited to support their local animal rescue organization or Lakeridge Health Ajax Pickering or Lakeridge Health Oshawa.
Though she is gone from our sight, Sylvia’s love, compassion, humour, and gentle spirit will remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
She was deeply loved, and she will be deeply missed.”
