September 30, 2025
In loving memory of Margaret Irene Rainville (nee Trowsdale) who passed away on Tuesday September 30th at Chapman House, Owen Sound with her children by her side.
Beloved wife to Maurice (predeceased).  Loving mother to Jeannette (Mike) of Port Elgin and Gerry (Cindy) of Port Elgin. Loving nana to Michelle,  Alison (Skinny) and Heather. Loving great nana to Chloe, Aiden, Bronson, Muirrin, Braelyn and Rhett.  Irene will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her parents Carl Trowsdale, Cathy (nee Hay) and stepfather John Lowry.
Irene was born in Peace River, Alberta. Her family moved to Vancouver Island at the beginning of WWII and eventually settled near Victoria. She belonged to a youth program of St. John Ambulance and was one of two girls from Canada to be chosen to attend the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. This started a lifelong love of travel. She moved from Victoria, B.C. to Deep River, Ontario in 1954 to work at AECL.  She met her husband Maurice there and they were married April 21, 1956. She raised her family there, and in 2016 moved with her husband to Port Elgin to be closer to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
She was willing to try new things, and with her family enjoyed skiing, snowshoeing, canoeing and camping. When she wasn’t outdoors, she could be found at her sewing machine, or knitting a baby sweater or dreaming up something new to cook for dinner. This still left time to be involved in the community where she quietly helped out where she could. She loved her family and worked hard at keeping connected with her western relatives. This included many trips to Alberta and British Columbia.
After her husband retired they truly indulged their passion for travel. They travelled around North America in an RV, did bus trips in Europe and cruised to exotic locations. They enjoyed square dancing and travelled to many square dance conventions.
The family would like to thank the staff at Elgin Lodge for their care of Irene over the many years she lived there. They would also like to thank Dr. Gleba for her compassionate care and guidance. Special thanks to Chapman House for her end of life care.
A mass for Irene will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at 11:00am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish, 920 Wellington Street, Port Elgin. Interment Sanctuary Park Cemetery.
Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family.
