Marianne Laurel Smith

It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Marianne Laurel Smith at Juravinski hospital in Hamilton on December 10, 2025 at the age of 58 years.

Marianne was born in Hamilton, Ontario on January 9th to Horace Fred Smith and Rosemary Anne Clendenan Smith. Marianne grew up at 22 Mountain Park Ave. with her parents and grandmother, Henrietta Clendenan who played a very special part in her life. Marianne and her Mom shared a love for cats (even if the cats didn’t always love Marianne – she was quick and liked to chase them down). Growing up Marianne enjoyed her vacations to Uncle George’s cottage where she loved splashing in the lake and trips to town with her Dad. In Hamilton Marianne attended special programs and enjoyed the outings and arts and crafts.

In her twenties, Marianne moved into Gage Park Group Home where she lived for many years, then moved to a brand new facility, Eaglewood Place in September 2011 where she spent the rest of her life. Both these homes had a tight-knit group of residents that Marianne considered a second family.

Marianne enjoyed many YWCA programs throughout her life and participated in many of the annual events sponsored by this organization. Marianne was always in motion, whether it be at home or at her programs or special events. She enjoyed going to the pool, trampoline park, picnics and seasonal parties. Marianne loved music especially Barry Manilow & ABBA which she listened to endlessly. Marianne’s favourite outings were shopping excursions or meals out at either Swiss Chalet or A & W and she she loved her coffee and pop.

Marianne is survived by her cousins Lynn & Doug & their families. She was preceded in death by her parents Fred & Rosemary and her Uncle George & Aunt Vida.

The family would like to thank the kind staff at the Juravinski hospital but most especially all the staff at Eaglewood Place, both past and present – in particular Marianne’s care supervisor for almost 25 years, Mandy. We are truly grateful for the care, advocacy and friendship that Mandy provided for Marianne.
