Harvey Otto Wilson was a paper mill worker by trade but a farmer at heart, a man who spent his entire life working the land he loved. From planting and growing the largest potatoes anyone has every grown, to tending his gardens and raspberry patch, to raising cows and calves and of course baling hay in the swelter of the summer heat, Harvey found purpose and peace in the rhythms of farm life. His trusted side kick and farm helper Neil Orr was always by his side to help. He took particular pride in his John Deere and Zetor tractors and working his cherished farm at Gordon Lake, a place that has been part of the Wilson family for over a century.
Physically, Harvey was a big, strong farmer, but beneath that sturdy exterior was a gentle soul with a deep love for his family and friends. Nothing brought him more joy than time spent with his grandchildren—Jack, Casey, Beth, and Josh—and his great-grandchildren, Elena and Everett. He missing meeting his newest great-grandchild Verry but he would have loved and cherished her as well.
He shared nearly 60 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Carol, a partnership rooted in love, loyalty, and shared hard work. Carol said she “lost half of her heart” as she said goodbye to her love, her life partner, who she dedicatedly took care of at home during his dementia journey until he lost the ability to walk and had to be move to long term care. The world has not seen a more dedicated, caring and loving spouse than Carol.
Harvey passed on valuable life lessons to his children, Tim and Theresa—sometimes through wisdom, sometimes through example, and occasionally through what not to do, complete with a few curses along the way. Over the past ten years, the family slowly said goodbye as Harvey faced vascular dementia, and his final months were especially challenging. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and farmer whose legacy lives on in the land he worked and the family he loved so dearly.
The family would like to thank everyone who came to visit and share their stories filled with love and good memories during his palliative journey, and also those who reached out by phone or message. The family also would like to thank the staff at Extendicare Maple View Echo Bay for the care given to Harvey over the last 18 months. Thanks also to the great staff who helped during his palliative transition; Maribel, Stacey, Chrissy, Taylor, and Debbie.
Cremation will take place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date at the Gordon Lake Hall near his home on the farm.
