Mae Elizabeth Yakiwchuk

September 5, 1941 – December 14, 2025

Smiling elderly woman in green shirt, dark background.

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025, at the age of 84.

Born on September 5, 1941, at Mackenzie Island Hospital, Mae was a lifelong resident of Red Lake, Ontario—a community she loved deeply and proudly called home. She was a cornerstone of Red Lake life for decades, best known as the proud owner and operator of the Red Lake Inn from 1966 to 2006. Through her dedication, hard work, and welcoming spirit, Mae created far more than a business; she built a gathering place where friendships were formed, stories were shared, and visitors were always made to feel at home.

Mae found joy in life’s simple and meaningful pleasures. She loved fishing, knitting, cooking for family and friends, and spending time with her beloved dogs. Her warmth, generosity, and quiet strength were felt by all who knew her. Mae had a gift for making people feel comfortable and cared for, and her presence will be deeply missed.

She was predeceased by her parents, John and Astrid Gustafson, and her sister, June McCammon.

Mae is lovingly remembered by her husband, Ralph; her daughter, Aileen (Dale); her son, John (Michelle); her granddaughter, Haley; and her brother, Cliff (Kate), along with extended family members, friends, and members of the Red Lake community.

A celebration of Mae’s life will be held in the summer of 2026, with details to be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mae’s memory may be made to the Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital Foundation or Auxiliary.

Mae’s legacy lives on in her family, her community, and the many lives she touched through kindness, hospitality, and love.
