ZAVITZ, Herbert Neil Zavitz

Herbert Neil Zavitz was the kind of man who never met a stranger. Whether at the coffee shop, the arena, or standing beside a tractor in a neighbour’s field, he could strike up a conversation with anyone. His easy smile and gentle nature made friends wherever life took him. Herb was the last of his family’s generation, predeceased by his parents, Doris & Reece Zavitz, and siblings Clayton, Don, Joyce and Norm, marking the end of an era.

Family was always at the center of Herb’s life. He was the devoted husband of Peggy and the proud father of Doris and Valerie (October 22, 2018); together, Peggy and Herb built a loving home where they raised their family, including their son Neil and their daughter Anne Marie (October 21, 2018). Herb cherished his role as Grandpa, mentoring, encouraging, and a faithful friend and Poppa to Sabastian (Alex) and Colton. One of his greatest joys was becoming “Poppy” to his treasured great-grandson, Hunter, whose bright future brought endless pride and hope.

Shortly after Herb and Peggy married, they settled on the family farm on RR #2, Thedford. The land that had been purchased by Herb’s parents in 1950, and in December 1975 they made it their home. The arena became a second home over the years. With countless hours at the arena, Herb became a familiar face, encouraging not only his own kids and grandsons but also generations of young players who came to know Herb as a quiet grandfather figure. Seeing Hunter already preparing for the coming years of hockey—wearing his little helmet to watch a game and practice with his little hockey stick would bring about that famous Herb smirk.

Herb worked many jobs; his hands were rarely still. Working as an electrical apprentice, driving truck, and later serving the people of Lambton Shores in many different roles. Herb was happiest when there was honest work to be done. He retired from the driver’s seat of a road grader, leaving behind roads well travelled and a reputation built on hard work, humility, and a willingness to help wherever he was needed.

In the recent past Herb checked off a list that kept him settled and determined to complete each one. Celebrating one more special wedding anniversary with his wife Peggy, returning a happy long time promise with an old friend, standing in his home church with Sabastian and Alex at their wedding as their Best Man, and with Colton’s help, climbing aboard his 1998 Case C60 tractor for one last drive.

Those who knew Herb will remember his easy-going nature and his gift for conversation. Herb had a remarkable way of making everyone feel welcome. His quiet kindness, warm smile, and genuine interest in others left lasting impressions that will be remembered for years to come. Herb is lovingly remembered by his wife Peggy; his children, grandchildren, great grandson, and will be missed by his in-laws, Sharon, Linda, Larry, Gerald, Sandie, and David (†) and their families. He will remain in the hearts of family, neighbours and lifelong friends whose lives were made brighter by his kindness.

Herb’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the many family, friends, neighbours, and caregivers who supported him with such kindness over the past several months. A special thank you is offered to the compassionate Palliative Care Team, who cared for Herb with exceptional comfort and dignity. Their favourite patient, affectionately known as “Herb-a-vore,” brought as many smiles to the team as they brought to him.

As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to Heart & Stroke Foundation or Knox Presbyterian Church would be sincerely appreciated by the family.

A good man doesn’t need to leave behind riches to be remembered. Sometimes all it takes is a welcoming smile, a warm handshake, a tractor in the shed, and a family who knows they were deeply loved.

Visitation will take place at Knox Presbyterian Church in Thedford, on Saturday, July 25, 2026 from 10:30 a.m. -11:30a.m followed by a Memorial Service at 11:30 a.m.
