SWAN, Rev. Peter Julian Michael - CSB - 99 years old, died at Anglin House, Toronto, ON, on November 15, 2018, after a brief illness.
He was a Basilian for 79 years and a priest for 75 years.
Peter was born in Folkestone, England, to Henry Peter Swan and Edna Hanson Green.
He is survived by his brother, Sir Conrad Swan, and by his nephew Andrew Swan and nieces Elizabeth Herring and Juliana Galvin.
Peter was first introduced to the Catholic Intellectual tradition when he enrolled in the University of St. Michael's College, Toronto, ON in 1935; he graduated with a BA in 1938. Peter continued his studies in Philosophy and received an MA ('42) and a Ph.D. ('45).
Peter entered the Tweedsmuir Avenue Novitiate in Toronto in 1939 and was professed on August 15, 1940. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop John R. MacDonald of Peterborough in St. Basil's Church, Toronto, ON.
Peter devoted his career to the advancement of Catholic higher education, chiefly through administrative positions in four institutions: Assumption College (later Assumption University), St. Thomas More College, University of Saskatchewan, St. Joseph's College in the University of Alberta, and the University of St. Michael's College.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 30, 2018 from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Chapel of the Cardinal Flahiff Basilian Centre, 95 St. Joseph Street, Toronto, ON. Interment to follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to can be made to the Basilian Fathers' Retirement Fund.
