Shortt ShirleySHORTT, Shirley Ann (Trott) - April 30, 1934 – October 4, 2021 - Shirley gently slipped away from us in Toronto in her 87th year.

Despite significant health problems in her later years, she felt very fortunate in so many ways starting with her birthplace in Toronto to a loving family (Shirley and Gordon Trott parents), Bev DesLauriers (David) her sister and a big broad family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.

The highlight of her life was to have exceptionally fine children – Jillian (Jay) and Robert (Liza) whom she loved and was so proud of at every step of their journeys. She regretted that her health did not allow her the time she personally wished for to be as involved with her two precious grandchildren (Delaney and Greyson Shortt). She eagerly followed every one of their achievements and dreams.

Shirley frequently expressed thanks to her many fine teachers (Allenby Public School and Lawrence Park C.I.) and professors (U of T – Victoria College). She also felt thanks to the Toronto Public Library for helping instill in her a lifelong love of reading. One of her overall favourite books was Anthony Powell’s Dance to the Music of Time.

Shirley loved her teaching career. Following in a long line of family educators, it was ordained that she follow this career path, first at Winston Churchill C.I. and after a pause to stay home with her family, she resumed her career at York Mills C.I. Surrounded by excellent students and great colleagues, she once declined a head of department role, favouring in class teaching over administrative duties.

Shirley brought her love of good design and fashion to everywhere she was, especially Two Bays on Lake Rosseau, and she also enjoyed a wide range of music, from Bach to Fats Waller. Shirley looked forward to every TSO concert with Stan and working with her wonderful colleagues for over 40 years at the Toronto Symphony Volunteer Committee and she found great joy in recalling the lyrics to the big band music of her childhood era.

Elegant is the single word to describe her – in thought, word and deed. Such a gentle, beautiful, intelligent lady will be missed by so many – none more so than her husband Stan. True soulmates, they shared a beautiful life together for 68 years.

Shirley and her family send thanks to all that helped her on her life journeys, especially the special loving care and kindness of the many staff at Belmont House.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial event will occur at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Shirley encourages you to be kind, to support a cause you endorse, and to re-read a great book.
