CATZ, Alejandro Zunia 'Alex' - With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of ALEX ZUNIA CATZ on Sunday, October 24, 2021 from Alzheimer’s – one day shy of his 94th birthday.

Loving husband and partner of 74 years to Clara Catz.

Beloved father of Marcelo, Laura, and Mariana. Loving grandfather of Jonathan, Benjamin, Felipe, Ethan and Pedro. Great grandfather to Akiva. A long life, active into his late 80s, still working until then.

He escaped Rumania, in 1939 at the age of 12 with his parents, settling in Buenos Aires. They were the only survivors of a very large family in the town of Edinti that was decimated by the Holocaust.

In Argentina, he built a good life which again was interrupted by the military coup in 1976. He not only endured incarceration as a political prisoner but saw one his children taken as a “desaparecido." When his daughter reappeared, and at the age of 50, he had to emigrate again to Canada to save his family. In Toronto, he slowly rebuilt a life to work in advertising.

He was a most eccentric of characters, always ahead of his time with views. A renaissance man, incredibly well-read and self-taught who loved a good intellectual debate. He was an extrovert who would speak to anyone anywhere and made friends wherever he went. He was an extremely generous man and loved his children and grandchildren deeply. His life was his family and his books and above all his Clarita (as he called our mum).

We thank his caregivers Den, Marylou, Joy and Celerina and the staff at Extendicare Bayview whose kindness saw him through his last 4 years.

Private Family Graveside Service arrangements.  Shiva private.

Memorial donations may be made to Jewish Freeloan 340, 4600 Bathurst St. Toronto, ON M2R 3V3 and Tel. 416 635 1217 www.jewishfreeloan.ca
