MITZAK, Jean Mary (nee GRECKOL) - Age 93, died, January 9, 2022, at Mackenzie Health in Richmond Hill, ON, after a brief hospitalization.
Jean was born December 17, 1928, in Toronto, with strong ties to her late mother's home in Alberta (Mary Dowhaniuk).
Her late father Harry William Greckol was born in Romania.
She was married to the late Mike Mitzak and was a loving mother to Michael, of BC, and the late William. Jean and her late brother Ernest Harry (Ernie), were close all of their lives.
She lived for a year in Russia when her father was selling tractors and she remembered her year of early schooling there.
She could remember saying "Spasibo", meaning "thanks a lot" and stories of lining up for bread and organ grinders with monkeys on the street below their apartment.
Jean was a longtime proud employee of the Toronto Star advertising department and she loved telling of her bustling time living downtown and working there.
Jean was an avid card player and joined the Euchre Club at her last condo home.
In later years, she contented herself playing cribbage with a neighbor – "Prepare to lose" was her rally call! Jean is survived by her son Michael and longtime friend June Stieben, with whom she had daily phone conversations right up to her death.
Rest in peace Jean, you are a good soul.
