CARTER, George Nelson -
September 13, 1942 - March 13, 2023
The family of George Nelson Carter is sad to announce his passing, on the afternoon of March 13, 2023.
Born in Gloucester County, Virginia, George moved to Canada in his late twenties.
He was a big man who made a big impression on those around him.
As a young man at Temple University and Yale, his political perspective gave him no shortage of critique of the politics of American race relations and justice.
At 6'9", it was not the draft that drove George to Canada in 1969, rather an academic career that took him first to Sir George Williams (as it then was), then to Guelph University and University of Toronto, where he taught political economy.
He reconciled himself to a career of law, being the first African American to graduate U of T law school.
His practice took him to the Northwest Territories. He settled in Toronto, returning to not only a practice of criminal law, but as well to his beloved partner, Rebecca, and in short order, their son, Sam.
A man of letters who practised law for decades, only to realise he was more of a man of notes, George found great joy in music later in life, recording as Big George Carter: the Famous Singing Lawyer.
We will remember him well this Sunday afternoon, if you wish to join us, please contact:
