MacEachen JanetMacEACHEN, Janet Claire,  LLB, LLM   -  With great sorrow, the family of Janet Claire MacEachen announces her passing on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at the Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital in Toronto.

 

Janet was 76 years of age.

 

Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia to her parents Charles and Mildred (English) MacEachen.

 

Janet attended Holy Angels High School and Mount St. Vincent University. Janet taught junior high school in both Vancouver and in Halifax.

 

She loved drama and often attended Broadway Plays in New York. She wrote several popular childrens plays. "Modesty Clean Meets the Devil" was performed at the Dominion Drama Festival in 1971 at the National Arts Centre.

 

Janet had law degrees from Dalhousie and the University of Wales.

 

She practiced criminal law in Toronto for many years. Janet eventually focused her law practice on the representation of victims of sexual assault in the protection of confidential health records.

 

In her efforts Janet lobbied for law reform and trained legal professionals.

 

For the last 10 years of her legal career, Janet sat on the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.

 

Whether as a practicing criminal lawyer or adjudicator on various social justice tribunals, throughout her career Janet was a fierce defender of women's rights.

 

Janet also sat as a Board member of various women's organizations.

 

Janet is survived by her brothers Peter, Toronto, Sandy (Carolyn), Markham and nephew Alan (Rosemary), Mahone Bay. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Charles.
