Appleby AnneAPPLEBY, Anne "Annie" Marie Russell Appleby  -  Aged 78, died on December 2, 2023, peacefully, at home.

She was born to Thomas and Maisie Appleby in Shildon, County Durham, UK, and was loved and brought up by Maisie and Fred Bell.

She trained as a nurse in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, and as a midwife at Hammersmith Hospital in London, before immigrating to Canada in 1968 to seek adventure and opportunity.

Annie met her spouse, PJ, an immigrant himself (though from Ireland), and fell in love, making Toronto their forever home.

A core part of their relationship was based on supporting one another's pursuit of professional and personal growth. Annie worked at Toronto General Hospital for many years in nursing, eventually as a director of nursing practice.

After raising her two sons, Annie trained as a teacher, eventually working as a superintendent for the Toronto District School Board. She was known as kind, a supporter of the socially disadvantaged and a keen mentor to aspiring leaders in both health and education.

Annie was a voracious reader and deep thinker with a prodigious memory who was always up for banter. Annie is survived by her spouse of 42 years, PJ Costello; and sons, Adam and Luke.

She will be sorely missed.

A Memorial Service will be held in Spring 2024.
