Carmela was born June 12, 1931 in Rende Cosenza, Calabria, Italy. She met her husband Antonio once before he was stationed in France and for the next five years they exchanged letters before they both moved to Canada in 1958 and were married soon afterwards on April 4, 1959 in Toronto.
