MacEachern HughMACEACHERN, Hugh Andrew - Was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island on December 27, 1928.

He was the second youngest child of the late Andrew and Alexina (Walker) MacEachern.

He passed away at age 92 at the Dartmouth General Hospital on February 9, 2021.

A child of the Great Depression, Hugh grew up to become a stoic, kind, knowledge-seeking, generous and hard working man.

As a young man, he truly was an academic minded person working hard in a solid blue collar world.

He began his work life as a child lighting candles in a synagogue that his childhood friends the well known Schwartz family attended (despite being a Catholic) and as a teen worked as a bartender in his family’s small business (an experience which led to him abstaining from drinking alcohol his entire life).

As a gifted carpenter, Hugh built his own house in a rural area called Cole Harbour in the early 1960s. loved the area and lived in that same solid home he built for 61 years.

Sadly, his dear wife Thelma died young of cancer in 1975 and he raised his youngest son Colin on his own for many years with the help of his oldest son Bernie. His sons became his main focus and they adored him.

Hugh was the last remaining sibling of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his mother and father, his brothers Alexander, Lauchlin, Allan, Duncan, John, and sisters Catherine, Florence and Francisca, as well as his wife Thelma and son Bernie.

Hugh is survived and mourned by a small remaining family: his son Colin MacEachern, grandchildren Kimberley Walker, April Myers, Kyle MacEachern and Zoe MacEachern and his daughter in law Joan MacEachern.

Thank you to the paramedics and all of the staff of the Dartmouth General Hospital Emergency and 4 West for your beautiful care of dad in his final weeks. Your efforts and kindness were so appreciated.

Any donations can be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation.

Hugh was an introverted, humble man and probably would not have wanted such a long obituary, but his life was long and such a beautiful story to tell. He is again with Thelma and Bernie and his big Cape Breton family in Heaven.

Though this is heartbreaking, Dad wouldn’t want us to be so sad that we stop enjoying life. As Dad would say, “Here today. Gone to Mira.” He will never be forgotten.

Funeral Mass will be held at Saint John XXIII on Tuesday February 16, 2021 at 10:00 AM. Registration is required due to COVID restrictions. Please contact Colin to be added to the list: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
