De Souza AloysiusDe SOUZA, Dr. Aloysius Phillip G.C.  - Dr. Aloysius Phillip De Souza, beloved and devoted husband and father, died peacefully on October 2, 2021 in Toronto, Ontario at the age of 85.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Bridget Ida De Souza, who passed away in February 2021. He is survived by his cherished daughter, Dr. Claire Michelle De Souza.

He was born in Zanzibar, East Africa to Luizinha (née Remedios) and Sebastian Xavier De Souza. He is survived by his sisters Felicity and Vita and predeceased by siblings Vera, Mary and Sylvester. His family members, near and far, were forever in his thoughts and prayers.

After graduating from St. Joseph’s Convent School in Zanzibar, he attended Saifabad Technical College in Hyderabad, India followed by Medway College of Technology in Kent, England. He was grateful to his parents for supporting his studies. He excelled at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, receiving silver and gold medals. He began a family practice career in England.

On September 12, 1970, he married fellow Zanzibari Bridget Ida De Souza whom he had known since childhood. She had traveled to the United Kingdom to train as a nurse and a midwife. He moved to Toronto, Canada with his family in 1976 where he enjoyed a successful medical practice in Scarborough, working with his wife, supporting patients. He delivered babies and assisted in the operating room at Scarborough Centenary Hospital. He cared for elderly patients at Tendercare Living Centre. After over five decades devoted to the practice of medicine, he retired in 2014.

He valued his family and took great delight in traveling the world together. He was proud to see his daughter embrace the medical field and continue the family tradition of helping others. He enjoyed reading, sharing a good laugh and playing competitive word games on his iPad.

He treasured friendships made through school, the Church, his work and the Goan community. He found great comfort in his Catholic faith.

He was appreciative of those who provided care to him in his last year. He will be remembered as wise, considerate and compassionate, both in the practice of medicine and in life. He will be greatly missed.

A Funeral Mass will be held to honour both Dr. Aloysius Phillip and Bridget Ida De Souza on Saturday, October 23rd at 11am at St. Joseph's Parish located at 200 Morrish Road, Scarborough, ON M1C 1E8 followed by an interment at Christ The King cemetery.
