It is with great sadness that the family share the sudden passing of Robert, born to Clarence and Merle of Hagersville. He died in peace at the North Bay Regional Health Centre on Monday April 13th, 2026 with family in his 86th year.

Robert William Whitford leaves his wife Maren and the Joles family. Loving father of Matthew, Paul (predeceased 1983), Nelson (Jennifer Betts), daughter Esther Balega (Steve) and their mother Lorna (predeceased 2002).  Loving Grandfather to Hannah, Aimee, Lydia Balega and Sarah Whitford. Survived by his siblings Rosalind (Ron Walsh), Bruce (Cathy), Dan (Shirley) and Ben Whitford as well as all his nephews and nieces.

Last but not least his loving canine companions Diesel (predeceased) and Wilfred.

Robert was an Educator in Northern Ontario earning his Masters of Education at the University of Ottawa in 1971. Fond memories as Vice-Principal at Tweedsmuir and E.W. Norman Public Schools. He retired as Principal at Mattawa District Public School.  His love of teaching will live on through colleagues, students and memories.

Robert had an enduring love for sailing that enriched his career and filled his retirement with joy. Whether gliding through the serene Waters of Trout Lake or Lake Nipissing, enjoying the company of fellow sailors, his spirit was always buoyed by the thrill of the open water. Those who had the pleasure of sailing alongside him, will remember his infectious enthusiasm and the joy he found in these moments.

When he wasn’t on the water, Robert found solace in music. He was an active member of the Emmanuel church choir where he sang passionately and many years with his barbershop Quartet. His rich voice and love for harmony touched many lives.

During his retirement, Robert embarked on a spiritual journey that led him to attain a level two Reiki certification. His compassionate nature drew him to hospital visitations, where he offered friendly support and comfort to those in need. Robert’s desire to help others was a testament to the love and kindness he carried within.

Each morning, Robert cherished the simple pleasure of swimming with friends and family at the Best Western. These gatherings were brightened by laughter, camaraderie and his vibrant spirit.

Travel was another of Robert’s great passions, he found joy in exploring new horizons. He cherished his winters spent on sunny beaches of Florida or boating with friends and family and .  Always embracing adventure. His thirst for travel never seemed to wane, and he created countless memories while discovering the world.

Robert’s Legacy is one of continual education, love for people and animals, adventure, and devotion to his community. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. As we celebrate his life, let us carry forward, his love for sailing, music, and compassion for others.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests the donations be made to Emmanuel United Church, or the North Bay Humane Society, to honour Robert’s spirit of giving, and support for those in need.

Rest in peace, dear Robert. You will forever sail in our hearts.
