IBE, Veronica Nilo Ibe
It is with profound sadness that we announce that Veronica Nilo Ibe passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Affectionately called β€œVernie” by her family and friends, she will be deeply missed by her beloved daughter Vanessa, her daughter-in-law Amber, and her grandkitty Ezra. She was predeceased by her parents, Pedro and Aurea Nilo, her devoted husband Jose (Sonny), her son Jasper and her brother Augusto (Gus). She is survived by her brother Conrad, and sisters-in-law Teri and Vicky. She will also be missed by her cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Vernie was born in the Philippines and was the middle child of the late Pedro and Aurea Nilo. She graduated from University of Santo Tomas majoring in math and physics. On June 10, 1972, she married the love of her life Sonny. They were married for 49 years and had two children, Jasper and Vanessa. Their loving family expanded again when Vanessa married her wife Amber.

Vernie loved and was fiercely loyal to her family often putting the needs and interests of her family ahead of her own. She did all she could to provide a life of love, and memorable experiences, for her children. As her nieces and nephews began to have children of their own, she loved to shower them with gifts and treats from their β€œLola V”. Her generosity truly embodied the belief that we should not keep the gifts that God has given us for ourselves but instead we should use them generously for the good of others.

In moments of immeasurable grief and sadness following the passing of her dear husband and son, she was a pillar of strength and resilience especially for her daughter Vanessa. In her final days, she prayed for happiness, health and comfort for her family.

Over her 79 years, Vernie enjoyed travelling and connecting with her family all over the world. In addition to travelling back to the Philippines many times, she also visited Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Thailand, Mexico, France, Spain, England, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Montenegro, and many states including Hawaii, California, Texas, Louisiana, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland and Nevada. She loved to cook and to eat, often saying that one of her greatest joys is watching friends and family enjoy the food she prepared. She was the host and organizer of many memorable family parties, and her presence at them will be sorely missed. She enjoyed her times reminiscing and telling stories of her travels, her childhood and her early years in Canada.

The family expresses their gratitude to Vernie’s home nurse and the team at the Sunnybrook Palliative Care Unit whose care and support allowed Vernie to enter her final stages with grace and dignity.

Vernie will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend.

The family invites family and friends to honour and celebrate Vernie’s life and memory at her Funeral Mass to be held on Saturday May 30, 2026 at 1:00 PM at St. Maria Goretti Church in Scarborough, Ontario.
