BURI, Carmen Rosa Buri

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of our beloved mother Carmen Rosa Buri (nee Cossaro) surrounded by the love of her family on June 5 th 2026. Fiercely proud of her Friulano heritage, Carmen was born on August 22nd ,1938 in Sant Andrat del Cormor, Udine, (Friuli) Italy. Carmen left her large family in the summer of 1959 to join her fiance Luigi in Canada where they started a new life. Having left post-war Italy, Carmen and Luigi envisioned a better future. Together, they raised four children: Rita (late Bruce Smith), Diana Hutton, Amedeo (Sharon Saxon) and Paola (Paul Peyton) and instilled in them a very strong work ethic.

Carmen was a dedicated Nonna to Amanda Plain (Brian Koiter), Erica and Benjamin Hutton, Hannah and Noah Peyton, and Allan and Carolyn Buri. She was a warm and loving presence in their lives, their true hero. Nonna never let them forget that they are Furlan and loved teasing with her many Friulano stories and proverbs. Being their Nonna was the joy of her life and she never shied away from attending their many activities. She was so very proud of each and

everyone of them and celebrated all their unique talents. Carmen was a wonderful cook and baker, filling her home with the most delicious flavours, including her homemade lasagna, soup, polenta, panetone and pizzelles which were savoured and will be remembered always. When the grandchildren were coming for supper, she was sure to cook their favourites. Carmen enjoyed her family vacations to the Caribbean, Mexico, and of course to Italy. She was

thrilled to celebrate her 80th birthday at Castelmonte, a Catholic sanctuary that was very dear to her heart.Carmen worked as a cleaner for the Niagara Catholic District School Board for many years and cherished the many relationships she developed with both staff and students. She was a member of the Fogolar Furlan of Niagara and the CWL of St. Therese Church in Port Colborne. Carmen’s life was characterized by selfless love, tenacity, independence, resilience and deep faith. A hard worker, she worked quietly behind the scenes without a complaint. She was the glue of our family, keeping everyone connected in her gentle (except for her nonna grip and hugs) and encouraging way. She is our inspiration and model of how to be a good person.

She is also survived by her siblings Duilio, Achille, Arrigo and Miriam in Italy as well as many relatives in Canada, Italy and the USA. Carmen was predeceased by the love of her life, Luigi (1992), her parents Marcellino and Ersilide, siblings Miriam, Dino, Adelia, Vittorina, Don, Erminio and Redento as well as many relatives in Canada, Italy and the USA.

Sincere thanks to her friends and neighbours who supported and helped our mom remain in the beloved home that she and our dad built. In addition, many thanks to the staff at the Welland Hospital Emergency Department for their warm and attentive care during a difficult time. The family will receive visitors at the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Friday, June 12th from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, June 13th at 10:30a.m. at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, 123 King St, Port Colborne. Rite of Committal at Mount St. Joseph Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honour of Carmen, may be made to: Cancer Society Society, Heart and Stroke, Foundation or St. Therese of Lisieux Roman Catholic Church.
