NISSEN, Deborah Ann Nissen

A resident of North Buxton, Deborah Nissen passed away peacefully at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Chatham Campus, with her family at her side on Sunday, June 21, 2026 at the age of 71.

Born in Chatham, Deb was the daughter of the late Gerald and Inez (nΓ©e Johnston) Lucier.

Beloved wife of 54 years to Jan Nissen, Deb was the heart of her family. She was a loving mother to Christopher, Timothy (Cyndy Chatten), and Carrie, and a proud Grandma to Aleksander (Steph Perron), Jace (Cassia), Holly (Alexis Cayer), Michael Smith, and Audrey. Over the years, as her own children grew, Deb was known as ‘Mom’ to a countless number of teenagers, many of whom though now grown, still refer to her as such. Dear sister to Joseph Lucier and lovingly remembered by her mother in-law, Johanna. Deb will be missed by nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

In 2007, Deb helped found Rat Terrier Rescue Canada, beginning what would become a life-defining mission, “Rescue One Until There Are None.” Over the next 20 years, she devoted herself wholeheartedly to rescuing and rehoming dogs of all breeds. Her dedication not only saved countless lives but also created a vast network of friendships to continue that mission. Deb’s family is eternally grateful for the friendships she made through rescue, and the strength and support they gave her when she needed it most.

The family would also like to extend their sincere appreciation to the amazing doctors and nurses at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and Victoria Hospital in London.

Deborah Ann Nissen will be remembered for her determination, her big heart and the love she shared with her family, friends, and the animals who so deeply mattered to her.

Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham on Friday, July 3, 2026 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm. Cremation to follow.

Donations made in memory of Deb to Rat Terrier Rescue Canada would be appreciated by the family.
