MELO, Silvestre Maria Remedios De Melo

It is with deep sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of Silvestre Maria Remedios de Melo, age 91, of Toronto, Ontario. He peacefully departed this world on July 4, 2026, after a long and fulfilling life devoted to faith, family, and service.

Born on December 31, 1934, in Nerul (Bardez, North Goa, India), he was the son of Aleixo João de Melo and Aramita Adelia Sebastiana Basta Furtado de Melo. In his professional life, he served as a professor at the Institute de Nossa Senhora de Piedade in Panjim, Goa. He was deeply committed to his students, often rising early in the morning to prepare his lectures. After moving to Toronto, he spent a short time teaching before transitioning to the government sector.

He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a strong moral compass for his family. His unwavering faith and deeply held principles guided his daily life and shaped his choices. Through his example, he instilled in his family the values of integrity, compassion and living a life rooted in faith and what is right.

He found great joy and fulfillment in serving the Church and his faith community. In Nerul, Goa, he cared for the needs of the chapel with dedication and love. At John XXIII Parish, he generously gave of his time as an usher, assisted with parish collections and prepared them for bank deposit. For over 40 years, beginning in 1980, he faithfully served as a Eucharistic Minister, bringing Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. In 1984, when Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass in Downsview Park, he went there to distribute Holy Communion. In recognition of his dedication, he was appointed Coordinator of the Eucharistic Ministry at John XXIII Parish on November 26, 1999.

Quality family time was important to him. He cherished celebrating birthdays and special occasions, and was attentive to the needs of those he loved. Though a man of few and measured words, he had a quiet and unique sense of humour that would shine through at unexpected moments.

In his younger years, he was known for his brisk pace and love of walking. He had a lifelong passion for historical and military fiction books and films, and even in his final days, he continued to read several books each month. He also enjoyed dark chocolate, Goa sausages, Indian snacks, Toronto Blue Jays baseball and his beloved weekday television show, The Young and the Restless.

He had a special concern for those in need and financially supported numerous charitable causes, as well as the Church. Whether through donations or small acts of generosity, he was always ready to help. In quiet and unassuming ways, his kindness was often revealed only later, through the gratitude of those whose lives he touched.

Silvestre leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, devoted service to the Church and quiet generosity. This legacy is reflected in the lives he shaped, the family he guided and the many acts of kindness that continue to inspire all who knew him.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Monica; his three children: Margaret, Aramita and Alex; and countless extended family and friends. He is reunited with his parents, Aleixo and Aramita de Melo and his beloved siblings.
