STRICKLAND, Gerald Lewis Strickland
January 5, 1948 - August 15, 2026It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Gerry Strickland, at the age of 78, on August 15, 2026.
Born on January 5, 1948, in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Gerry grew up surrounded by family and the warmth of his Newfoundland roots. At the age of 20, he moved to Ontario, where he built a life filled with love, family, friendships, hockey, music, and countless memories.
Gerald Lewis Strickland was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a deeply caring and generous person who was always thinking of others. He was easygoing and considerate, and he had a quiet way of making the people he loved feel important.
He was always the one picking someone up at the airport, driving his kids everywhere, lending a hand, cooking up a storm, or simply showing up when he was needed. His family and friends knew they could count on him. Helping others was simply part of who Gerry was.
Gerry was a very involved father to his children, Troy (Liza) and Amanda (Adam), and a loving grandfather to Sara, Katie, Aleah, and Aren. He took great joy in being part of their lives and was always there for them in the quiet, dependable way that was so characteristic of him. Family was at the centre of Gerry’s world, and the love he had for his family was evident in everything he did.
He was a devoted husband to Joan, his wife of 54 years. When Gerry was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and Posterior Cortical Atrophy 11 years ago, Joan stood faithfully by his side. She cared for him at home for as long as she could before he moved into long-term care, and for the last three years she visited him multiple times daily. Her love, devotion, and unwavering support were a beautiful testament to the bond they shared.
Gerry loved staying active. He enjoyed walking and biking and, most of all, hockey. He played in a hockey league for much of his adult life and remained a devoted Toronto Maple Leafs fan.
Music played an important part in Gerry’s life. He was a fan of classic rock, especially the Eagles and the Beatles. He looked forward to family gatherings when someone picked up a guitar and everyone joined in for a singalong. We can imagine Gerry bringing out the Newfie spoons to play along.
For his family, some of the fondest memories of Gerry will be found around the kitchen table. He loved to cook and was known for making hearty meals for the people he lovedβchicken noodle soup, stir fries, pasta, barbecue, and so much more. Cooking was one of the many ways Gerry showed his love: quietly, generously, and always making sure everyone was taken care of.
Gerry will be deeply missed by Joan; his children Troy (Liza) and Amanda (Adam); his grandchildren Sara, Katie, Aleah, and Aren; his nine siblings and their spouses; Joan’s eight siblings and their spouses; and his many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Vivian and Walter.
Gerry was deeply loved, and the greatest measure of his life is the love he gave and the many people who were better for having known him. His family and friends will remember his kindness, his generosity, his gentle nature, his willingness to help, and the countless ways he was simply there.
We will miss him more than words can say, but we will carry his love with us always.
A celebration of Gerry’s life will be held in the fall with close family and friends. Details will be shared at a later date.
