STRAHL, Richard J. Strahl
April 6, 1939 - August 18, 2026
Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family on Tuesday August 18, 2026 at the age of 87 years.Β Loved and cherished by his wife of 42 years, Anna nee Dix.Β Loved and dearly missed by daughters, Janice, Andrea, Sandy, Lisa, Sonya & Son-In-Law Peter.Β Loved and dearly missed by his grandchildren and great grandchildren Mia, Caitlin, Matthew, Amanda, Zachary, Danielle, Ryan, Nicole, Owen and Isla.Β Miaβs many visits brought him endless joy and laughter. She lovingly helped her Opa with his daily needs and shared a special bond with him.
He was also loved by Karl, Donna, Nick, Christine, Paul and Sam who were always there in good times and bad.Β He will be fondly remembered by his cousins, Monica (Cahal), Eric (Sharon) and Helmut and sorely missed by dear friends Josie, Lori, Una, Colin, Mike and Margaret who are family in every sense of the word.
Richard came to Canada with his family at the age of 14 from Austria and through the help of the priest at St. Patrick’s Church in Toronto, obtained a position in a Print Shop where he began his apprenticeship as a Printer.Β He loved his years at the Telegram until it closed in 1973 at which time he was one of a few hired by the Toronto Star where he worked for 25 years.
Richard and his friends took dancing lessons so the girls at the German Hall would dance with them.Β However, it took many years before Anna caught up with him there in 1982.
Richard was an avid reader all of his life until his failing eyesight prevented reading.Β He also loved to play German cards with his friends at the Danube Swabian Club until that was no longer possible.
Richard and Anna married on December 31st, 1983 and built their first house in Markham.Β There followed three more lovely homes in 42 years of which the last was the best which they purchased with Janice in 2015.
After moving to Penetanguishene in 1998, Richard joined the Knights of Columbus where he filled several positions, including Navigator.Β Richard and Anna moved from Penetanguishene in 2015 and although he was no longer able to participate he continued to maintain his memberships for the Third and Fourth Degree.Β He was very proud to serve for many years.
Throughout the years Richard skied many times with Colin and Mike which was a passion for him along with the many German dances that he and Anna went to with their friends.Β On a personal level, Richard and Anna spent many hours a week gardening together, doing Yoga and long walks…all to keep healthy….and not to forget all the travelling they did over the years, especially all the cruises with the Dix’s.
Richard was a gentleman to the core and ahead of his time when it came to working along with Anna in the kitchen or helping to clean the house.
