
Steven Michael “Smitty” Smith passed away peacefully at home on September 3, 2026, following a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 47.Born in Cobourg, Steve is remembered for his outgoing personality, quick humour and thoughtful conversations. He loved sports, especially hockey, baseball and golf, as both a participant and supporter. During his illness, he worked to raise awareness and help others learn about pancreatic cancer.
Steve shared 26 years with his wife and best friend, Hollie. He is remembered by his parents, Mike and Glenda Smith; sister Dawn Fawcett (Tom); daughter Raven Taylor (Jesse); in-law family Grace Landers (Danny), Paul Yorke (Debbie) and Heather White (Jim); nieces and nephews Braeden (Alyssa), Paige, Ryan, Brody, Tysen and Ben; lifelong friend Jason Wakely and family; cousins Lindsey Clow (Ron) and Mike Bowman; and many extended relatives, friends, teammates, coworkers and neighbours. He was predeceased by his sister, Carla Smith.
Steve travelled across Ontario to support young athletes and later helped coach a special group of hockey players with his longtime friend Jody Whelan (Toni). His family also thanked the doctors, surgeons, nurses, personal support workers and palliative-care team who supported him.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Pancreatic Cancer Canada or the Northumberland Humane Society.
