It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and G.G., Betty Doreen Greentree (nee Hoskin), on February 12, 2025.
Betty passed away peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa surrounded by her loving family. Betty is survived by her two sons Bradley Greentree (Anne), and Jason Greentree (Geana), her grandchildren, Whitney Corcoran (Brian), Janson Greentree (Devon), and Shea Greentree. She was also blessed with three great grandsons the three “L’s” Logan, Levi, and Leo Corcoran.
Betty leaves behind two brothers Jack Hoskin (Carol), and Joe Hoskin (Lois), and sisters-in-law Linda Hoskin, and Mary Hoskin, and brothers-in-law Neil Greentree, and Brian Smith.
She was pre-deceased by her parents Howard Wesley Hoskin and Florence Jean Hoskin (nee Love) as well as her siblings: Gordon Hoskin, Ken Hoskin, Anna Marie Greentree, Shirley Mason, Gary Hoskin, Donna Smith and Joanne Harper.
Betty married the love of her life, Douglas Greentree and together they raised their family for 32 years until his death in 1993.
In 1999, Betty married Charlie (Cecil) Durno, her special friend and companion with whom she spent many happy years until his death in 2021.
Betty will also be reunited in Heaven with her cherished friend and beloved granddaughter Olyvia Greentree.
Betty was born in and lived in Oshawa her entire life until she moved to Whitecliffe Retirement Home (in Courtice) in 2023.
To put Betty’s life message into a few words is difficult as she extended herself in so many ways. She was a pillar in the community with her friendly face and willingness to lend a helping hand. Betty was a charter member of Harmony United Church in Oshawa and could be found there often to oversee outreach projects, board meetings, renovations, and to worship with the congregation.
Betty’s family felt her love through the time she generously spent attending the activities she knew meant the most to them.
From her parents, spouses, children, grandchildren, siblings, friends, to countless others, Betty put her whole heart into caring for them in every way she could with the utmost consideration and genuine spirit.
During the hard times she was there to nurture those who needed it and to be a pillar of strength. Her own struggles were met quietly with grace and dignity.
She took time for herself to curl, play golf, or spend quality time with friends and family at the cottage on Crowe Lake.
Betty especially enjoyed family games or card nights at the cottage. Her favourite part about it was being together, usually winning the game, and the bowls of treats she never let go empty.
She might not have known it, but our favourite parts were her witty sense of humour and hearing her laugh.
Betty will be missed and forever remembered by her many nieces, nephews, friends and her exercise and bingo buddies at Whitecliffe.
Thank you to Pam, her PSW at Whitecliffe, the Physio team Gabi, Goms and Paviesha and the caring health team at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Words cannot express how much we appreciated the TLC you gave our dearly cherished mother.
A Celebration of Betty’s Life will be held on Wednesday February 26, 2025, at THORNTON CEMETERY & FUNERAL CENTRE (1200 Thornton Road North, Oshawa, 905-579-6787) with visitation at 9:30am, until time of service at 11:30am, with inurnment to follow.
