FERNANDO, Christopher Fernando

Born in Wattala, Sri Lanka on November 8, 1939, Muthunaidelage Samuel Christopher Fernando of Owen Sound passed away peacefully in his 87th year at his home on Tuesday, May 19th, 2026.

Loving husband of Tilak Fernando (nee Gunaratne). Loving father of Chrishan, Chandi and Sasha. Cherished father-in-law of Cory and Michel. Devoted grandfather of Caelan, Sathya, Mahé, Kienna, Colton and Noah. Dear brother of Oswald and Malcolm. Chris will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Predeceased by his parents Cyril and Louise Fernando (nee Samuel), brothers Harold and Lloyd, and by his in-laws.

Chris began a long and beautiful career as a physiotherapist in Canada, spanning close to six decades. He pioneered the first private practice in the Grey Bruce area, opening the doors to the Owen Sound Physiotherapy Clinic in 1984. He was a life-long learner, travelling the world to bring techniques such as acupuncture to his practice. He enjoyed treating and helping patients on their road to wellness and mentored many students who are now physiotherapists in our community. He retired in 2025, at the age of 86.

Chris is known for his deep-rooted love of soccer and in 1976 was a founding president who helped launch the Owen Sound Minor Soccer Association. He volunteered countless hours to the association over the years as a club executive, referee, and as coach to many teams. He continued to sponsor young athletes in our community until 2025. He was named Volunteer of the Year in 1998 and was inducted into the Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. His presence in the lives of loved ones and his community will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held at Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, 250 14th St. W., Owen Sound, 519-376-7492, on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, from 6-8 p.m. A funeral service to commemorating Chris’ life will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at 5 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to service. The service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.
