KORBUTIAK, Stephan Korbutiak
January 1, 1933 - April 27, 2026
Peacefully, surrounded by family, Stephan Korbutiak passed away at the age of 93, in Ottawa.
He is lovingly remembered by Martha, his wife of nearly 66 years; his daughters Chrystia, Oresta and Laryssa and sons-in-law, Roman, Christopher and Brian; and the loves of his life, his granddaughters Arkadya, Kalyna and Lukia. He is also survived by his brother Peter, wife Anne and many family members. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Vasyl.
Born on January 1, 1933, in Balyntsi, Ukraine, his family was forced to flee in 1944, living in a refugee camp in Landeck, Austria before arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax, Canada in 1949. The family settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Through steady effort and perseverance, he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1958 and went on to build a long and dedicated career with Canadian National Railway. Stephan was a lifelong learner and explorer, with a deep curiosity about the world. In retirement, he continued with railway consulting work in India, Mozambique, and Indonesia.Β In 2005 Stephan and Marta relocated to Ottawa where he took great joy in spending time with his beloved granddaughters.
He carried a profound connection to his heritage and community. A long-time and dedicated member of Plast Ukrainian Youth Association and Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre in Winnipeg. His commitment was quiet, steady, and enduring βalways from the heart.
He was a kind man β the kind of kindness you felt without needing explanation. Fiercely loving and deeply devoted, his greatest joy was his family. He was a fun and loving father, and a proud grandfather who adored his daughters and granddaughters.
Tatu and Didushu, you were always the needle on our compass, guiding us wherever lifeβs journeys took us.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Redwoods for their care, kindness, and compassion.
