MCGRAY, Hal Andrew McGray

With deep sadness, and with gratitude for a life well lived in Christ, we announce Hal’s peaceful passing at Carpenter Hospice on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026.

Beloved husband of Lois Jean (née Saunders) for 65 years. Loving father of Mark (Jane), Shelley Hanson (Scott), and Brent (Melissa). Cherished grandfather of Jessica Higgs (Ben), Tyler, Lauren Malek (Athneil), Blair (Liz), Jamie Hayhoe (Lyndon), Seth, Liam (Nicole) and Bobbi. He will also be lovingly remembered by his great-grandchildren: Kaiden, Paisley, Amina, Gabriel, Theodore, Indigo, Winnie, and Lark, each of whom brought him great joy.

Hal Andrew McGray is survived by his brother Ted (Lin), his sister Jean Green (Dave), and his sister-in-law Marion Lynds (Walter), along with their loving families.

Born and raised in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Hal met the love of his life, Lois, at Bethany Bible College. Together, they moved to Ontario, where they built a home grounded in faith, love, and family.

Hal will be deeply remembered for his abiding faith in Jesus Christ, his gentle and humble spirit, and the quiet way he made everyone feel seen, valued, and loved. His life was a reflection of kindness, patience, and grace.

A graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University (1974), Hal enjoyed varied and fulfilling careers. Among his many roles, he taught at General Brock High School in Burlington. He also shared his passion for carving through private instruction and at the Haliburton School of Fine Arts.

An exceptionally talented bird carver, Hal received numerous awards at the World Carving Championships in Ocean City, Maryland, and at the Canadian National Carving Championships. He was respected not only for his skill, but for his generosity and encouragement within the carving community.

Hal also found great joy in God’s creation—he was well travelled, an accomplished photographer, and an avid birdwatcher, always attentive to the beauty around him.

While our hearts grieve his loss, we rejoice in the assurance that he is now at peace in the presence of his Lord and Saviour.
