Robert, William Sheridan 1931 -2025 – predeceased by his parents, Mel and Gladys (Lusty) of East York;
Eleanor, Jean Sheridan (née Cunningham), 1924- 2020 – predeceased by her parents, Floyd and Ruth (Richardson) and her sister Anne of Aurora;
were both graduates of Victoria College university of Toronto where Bob studied classics and translation and Jean studied English. They met at Bowmanville High School and were married for 64 years. Bob was a passionate and unique teacher of Latin and Greek for 33 years.
Jean lived her childhood dream of teaching English and acting as department head for 10 years. She continued to teach while raising her young children. They were both known for their directing of school productions and the founding of the Bowmanville Drama Workshop influencing many to pursue a vocation in the theatre. Bob also coached basketball and was a lifelong hockey player. His skill and love for hockey was known by many in the community through local leagues and in particular through the Old-Timers Hockey which he proudly ran till he turned 80. Bob was an avid skier, golfer, hiker and marathon runner. He nurtured and shared his vegetable garden and enjoyed wine on his back porch with neighbors. He had an enthusiasm for befriending strangers and making connections. He was grateful for these experiences in his life and would retell his stories to his family and friends. Jean dedicated her life to raising her two sons and her many cats. Her love of English literature, and poetry was appreciated best in her later years by her book club friends. As arthritis took its toll Jean turned to knitting for her grandchildren, friends, and local charities. Bob was admired by many for his devotion and loving care of Jean. They will also be remembered for organizing and directing the Christmas pageant at Trinity United Church.
Bob and Jean will be missed by their loving sons : John, (Toni), Paul (Lucy); their grandchildren: Stephanie, Eric, Scarlett; and niece, Cathy Dye and her family from Los Angeles. The family would like to thank the many friends and neighbours, P. S. W.’s, and Strathaven staff who cared for them with good humour and affection. A Celebration of their lives will be held at Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, 53 Division Street, Bowmanville, on August 4th at 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Bob and Jean to a charity of your choice.
