SUTHERLAND,James (Jim) Sutherland

James (Jim) Sutherland left this world in the early morning of May 1, 2025, at age 98. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Ella (Stewart), and his sisters Anne, Kath, and Thelma. Survived by his brother Peter and children Joanne (Martin), Michael (Debbie), and David (Zoe), as well as grandchildren Calvin (Breanna), Jenna Crook, and Kinsey, Max, and Elsie Sutherland.

Born in Cranbrook, BC, to Eileen and John James Sutherland on March 12, 1927, Jim had a brilliant academic journey, earning his Civil Engineering degree from UBC, a Master’s from Stanford, and a PhD from the University of Illinois. He worked at Alcan International in Kingston until retirement. In 1956, he married Ella, and together they raised a loving family and built a life centered around the outdoors, including a cherished cottage on Buck Lake.

Jim had many talents and passions: skiing, scuba diving, sailing, woodworking, and family gatherings. He cherished summers with his grandchildren, especially at “Camp Grandpa.” In his later years, Jim moved to Ottawa and eventually to Oakville to be closer to family. His final days were spent peacefully at Wyndham Manor in Oakville.

In accordance with his wishes, Jim’s ashes will be spread at the family cottage on Buck Lake, where his late wife Ella’s ashes were also laid. A small family gathering will be held in the coming year to celebrate his life. No formal funeral service will be held.
